Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs / LMFTs) became eligible for Medicare provider status through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, joining LMHCs as newly covered mental health provider types. MFTs can now enroll in Medicare Part B and bill independently for mental health services.
Enrollment requirements
- Master’s or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a COAMFTE-accredited (or equivalent) program
- Two years of post-degree supervised clinical experience
- State licensure as an MFT at the independent practice level
- Authorization under state law to diagnose and treat mental health conditions
- Type 1 NPI (individual)
- Enrollment via CMS-855I or PECOS
Covered services
Medicare covers the same core mental health services for MFTs as for other covered mental health practitioners:
- Individual psychotherapy (90832, 90834, 90837)
- Family psychotherapy (90846, 90847)
- Group psychotherapy (90853)
- Crisis psychotherapy (90839, 90840)
- Psychiatric diagnostic evaluation (90791)
